Federal Reserve Holds Interest Rates Steady,
Signals Possible Cuts this Year
June 20, 2019
The U.S. Federal Reserve (U.S. Central Bank) held interest rates
steady on Wednesday but signaled possible rate cuts of as much
as half a percentage point over the remainder of this year, as
it responded to increased economic uncertainty and a drop in
expected inflation.
The Fed said it “will act as appropriate to sustain” a nearly
10-year economic expansion, and dropped its pledge to be
“patient” before rate moves. Now nearly half of policymakers
show a willingness to lower borrowing costs over the next six
months.
