Qatar’s Consumer Price Index (YoY) Decreases

Qatar’s consumer price index registered 95.91 points
(calculated at 2018 as a base-year) during June 2020. This figure
reflects an increase by 0.26% compared to preceding month May 2020 and a
decrease by 3.41% against June 2019.
The index which measures the inflation is comprised of
12 major groups starting with food and beverages group and ending with
commodities and miscellaneous services group. A number of 737 goods are
listed under these groups.
The data issued by Qatar Planning and Statistics
Authority reflected that the monthly rise of the index between May and
June 2020 came as a result of the increase in prices of five groups.
However, two groups registered decrease in prices and prices of five
groups remained stable.
Price increase included; transportation group by 3.22%,
food and beverages group by 2.52%, commodities and other services by
0.74%, furniture and home appliances by 0.06% and education group by
0.01%. ‘Entertainment and culture’ and ‘garments and footwear’ groups
witnessed a decrease in prices by 6.06% and 0.62% respectively. Prices
remained stable for ‘tobacco’, ‘housing; water; electricity; gas and
other fuel types’, health, telecommunications and restaurants and hotels
groups.
With respect
to the annual variation, the issued date reveals that the general index
was decreased by 3.41%, as a result of the decline in prices of seven
groups being ‘entertainment and culture by 16.17%, garments and footwear
by 4.85%, transportation by 4.56%, housing, water, electricity, gas and
other fuel types by 3.62%, telecommunications by 3.26%, food and
beverages by 0.70% and furniture and house appliances by 0.39%’.
Annual
increase conversely took place on ‘tobacco by 4.41%, goods and other
services by 2.50%, health and education by 1.19% each and restaurants
and hotels by 0.35%’.
Excluding
the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel types group, the
index reached 96.59 points recording an increase by 0.33% vis-à-vis
preceding month May 2020 and a decrease by 3.26% vis-à-vis June last
year 2019.
