16.6  billion riyals surplus in the trade balance of the State of Qatar in May 2021, an increase of 211.4% on an annual basis

The Planning and Statistics Authority issued its preliminary report on foreign trade statistics for the month of May 2021. The report includes data on exports (of local origin and re-exports) and imports. The following is a brief presentation of the data:
During the month of May 2021, the value of the total Qatari exports (which includes exports of local origin and re-exports) amounted to approximately 24.9 billion Qatari riyals, an increase of 87.8% compared to May 2020, and an increase of 18.9% compared to April 2021.
On the other hand, the value of merchandise imports increased during May 2021, reaching about 8.3 billion Qatari riyals, an increase of 4.7% compared to May 2020, and an increase of 1.7% compared to April 2021.
In light of this, the merchandise trade balance, which represents the difference between total exports and imports during May 2021, achieved a surplus of 16.6 billion Qatari riyals, registering an increase of 11.3 billion Qatari riyals, or 211.4% compared to the same month of the previous year 2020, and an increase of 3.8, almost 1 billion Qatari riyals, or 29.9%, compared to April 2021.
Comparing between May 2021 and May 2020, the value of exports of “oil gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons”, which represent (liquefied natural gas, condensate, propane, butane, etc..) increased to about 14.0 billion Qatari riyals, by 70.1%, and the value of “petroleum oils Oil and oils of bituminous raw mineral materials” increased to reach approximately QR 4.0 billion, or 201.5%. The value of exports of “petroleum oils and oils obtained from non-crude bituminous minerals” increased to about QR 2.5 billion, or 349.9%.
In terms of exports by main destination countries, China ranked first in the destination countries for Qatar’s exports during May 2021 with a value of approximately QR 3.6 billion, or 14.42% of the total value of Qatari exports, followed by Japan with a value of approximately QR 3.6 billion, or a percentage of 14.36% of the total value of exports, followed by South Korea with a value of approximately 2.8 billion Qatari riyals, or 11.2%.
In a comparison between May 2021 and May 2020, the group of "cars and other vehicles mainly designed to transport people" came on the list of merchandise imports, with a value of 0.4 billion Qatari riyals, an increase of 140.4%, followed by the group "jet turbines, propelling turbines, and other gas turbines and its parts” 0.3 billion Qatari riyals, with a decrease of 66.3%, and the group of “electrical devices for the wired telephone (telephone) or telegraph (telegraph), including the devices that transmit the network, and its parts” which amounted to approximately 0.2 billion Qatari riyals, an increase of 58.0%.
In terms of imports according to the main countries of origin, China ranked first in the countries of origin for the imports of the State of Qatar during the month of May 2021 with a value of approximately 1.5 billion Qatari riyals, or 17.5% of the total value of merchandise imports, then the United States of America with a value of 1.0 billion Qatari riyals, or 12.5 percent %, followed by Germany with a value of QR 0.7 billion, or 8.0%.
