Nakilat, the leading LNG carrier, has partnered with ABS to develop a strategy for ship exhaust decarbonization in its fleet segment.
Over the past months, the Nakilat project team has been working closely with ABS sustainability professionals to develop plans and decarbonization pathways for Nakilat's fleet of 69 LNG carriers and four LPG carriers. These efforts have been repeated as part of Nakilat's quest to become a global leader in sustainability in maritime transport.
The project will eventually see Nakilat vessels receive a sustainability token from ABS; The symbol confirms compatibility with the United Nations sustainable development goals and at the same time paves the way for Nakilat to obtain a sustainability certificate.
Commenting on the project, Eng. Abdullah Al-Sulaiti, CEO of Nakilat, said: “Nakilat has grown very rapidly over the years to become a leader in the global power transmission sector. We recognize the important role we play in reducing our carbon footprint and are committed to conducting our operations in a sustainable manner. In addition to this partnership with ABS, we also lead a working group with our joint venture partners to ensure that our global fleet operations are in line with the IMO's decarbonization goals. Our focus is on the sustainable development of the Nakilat fleet beyond 2030, which contributes to the achievement of Qatar National Vision 2030 and our own vision is to be a leading global company and provider of choice for energy transmission and marine services. "
The ABS Handbook of Sustainability Codes includes interpretations of these codes with the aim of helping marine operators meet the environmental, social and regulatory requirements as set out in the Sustainable Development Goals. The guide focuses on the sustainability aspects of ship design, commissioning and operation that can be monitored, measured and evaluated. These aspects include pollution and waste, coastal and marine ecosystems, energy efficiency and performance monitoring, low carbon fuels, and asset recycling.
Commenting on the partnership, Georgios Plevrakis, Director of Global Sustainability, ABS, said: “It is a great honor to be able to support Nakilat in achieving its goal of becoming a leader in marine sustainability. ABS is proud to work with forward-looking operators who are committed to not only defining a sustainable foundation for the industry but also to show how today we can make great strides toward realizing that dream. ABS is an industry leader and always strives to develop tools and strategies that help ship owners decarbonize their businesses, and demonstrate their progress toward carbon-neutral operations with simplicity and clarity.”
